The inclusion of metal detailing in timber furniture dates as far back as Ancient Egypt where precious metals were used to decorate timber furniture. Greek and Roman furniture continued to include metal detailing with Bronze becoming the metal of choice.

Metal detailing features in the traditional timber furniture of many cultures including detailed iron work in traditional Japanese chests, and other Moroccan and Indian furniture.

 

The shift toward modernism in the early to mid twentieth century saw furniture become sleek and simple with minimal detailing. This has diminished the use of decorative metal detailing in furniture and reinforced the use of metal in a highly functional role as table bases and furniture legs.

With steel now the metal of choice it can be finished in a variety of methods to create individual looks including slick natural and brushed finishes, coloured powder-coating and blackened rustic styles.
