Time for your Spring Clean?

We are more than half way through spring and Christmas is fast approaching! We all know what this means, time to give the house one thorough clean and polish before we can go out and enjoy another beautiful Brisbane summer, but what are the best techniques to keep your timber furniture looking fabulous.

Here are our favourite timber tips:-

Cleaning Product Selection

Make sure you are using the right products on your timber furniture. Never use harsh products like, bleach, ammonia or jiff when cleaning your timber furniture.

Abrasive products are sure to leave scratches in your timber polish and alkaline products will just leave you with no polish at all!

A duster and damp soapy cloth is all you need to clean your timber furniture.

Timber Polish

It's a great idea to polish your timber once a year to restore moisture and shine to the timber but be prepared for a bit of elbow grease.

A quality timber bees wax will help restore your polished timber furniture. Apply with a soft lint free cloth in the direction of the grain and ensure to continue polishing until all the wax has been completely absorbed to ensure no milky residue is left behind.

A timber oil can be used to preserve your outdoor furniture for years to come.

Removing Sticky Marks

All parents have experienced the delight of finding stickers plastered all over the timber furniture! Sometimes these can be easily removed others can leave a nasty sticky residue.

To remove the residue without effecting your timber polish use a small amount of tea tree oil on a cotton bud and gently rub over the residue. The tea tree oil will help dissolve the residue and wipe with a clean cloth to remove the remnants. If your first attempt doesn't remove it all then repeat the process until all the residue has been gently removed.

White Cup Rings

Finding white cup rings on your furniture can be horrifying but taking advice from the team at "This Old House" http://www.thisoldhouse.com/how-to/how-to-fix-furniture-finish it seems moisture rings are not as big a deal as we all think.

Using a clean cloth with a light misting of Mentholated Spirits gently work over the surface until the white ring disappears. Ensure to be very careful with the amount of product you use to ensure you do not dull the polish.

Heat Damage

Similar to the white cup rings finding heat damage to your timber furniture can be devastating as we recently found out. And unfortunately repairing this damage can be a lot harder.

For only minor damage as seen in our before and after pictures below we were able to repair the surface with an application of quality bee's wax worked into the surface however for more extensive damage you may need to consult a restoration specialist or have the piece refinished.

We hope these tips have your timber furniture look great for the festive season and another year to come.

Mix and Match Eclectic Dining Chairs

Are you keen to do something a bit different with you dining furniture but you don't know where to start? The traditional dining suites not really your style but you need something practical and serviceable for the family. Or maybe you are on a tight budget but still looking to create something special.

Mix and match dining chairs could be the perfect solution. With an array of different chair styles to choose from you can create the perfect atmosphere to suit your home and achieve this designer style all on an affordable budget.

We have had a look at how the 'Pros' are doing it and reviewed our favourite looks.

Monotone style

The simplest and safest option for a mix and match dining suite is the monochrome style. Using your existing timber furniture and some extra chairs, paint everything the one colour to create this eclectic yet sophisticated look. Or jazz it up using one vibrant colour to a mix of chairs set around a timber table.

Industrial style

The mix and match dining suite is the perfect complement to the industrial style home. The use of different colours, textures, finishes and chair styles fits perfectly with the raw finishes and industrial vibe. We love the mix of timber, metal and upholstered chairs used by this designer to create this unique industrial look.

Homestead style

Perhaps the original creator of the mix and match style, traditional homesteads used a mix of random chairs out of necessity with much of life centred around the dining table. To create this authentic rustic look collect a few different styles of timber chairs and leave them in all of their aged and battered glory. A long, solid timber table completes the look to create a warm and homely atmosphere.

Multi coloured style

Great for the family this bright and cheerful style adds fantastic colour to your space and doubles as a fun family project. Everyone can choose their favourite chair from the local second hand store, add in an afternoon of sanding and painting and your new dinging suite is ready to go.

We recommend you chose your preferred colours and tones before heading to the paint store to ensure your colours work together with your existing décor.

Eclectic style

If you're thinking all these options look great but are a bit to 'themed' for your place then a simple eclectic style is the way to go. With no need for painting or any specific guidelines just chose a few different chair styles to go with your existing décor and away you go. So if you are looking for something a bit different be daring and try your hand at a mix and match dining suite.

Sustainability is a topic most commonly associated with major industry but have you ever stopped to consider how your timber furniture might have impacted on the worlds forests?

“Illegal logging is the lead cause of degradation of the worlds forests”

With countries such as Peru and Myanmar having a staggering 80% of logging carried out illegally. This includes logging in protected areas and of protected species and logging significantly higher than the sustainable rate.

Luckily here in Australia we have strong policies regarding logging in our nation as well as the importing of timber and timber products, however sometimes this illegal timber can sneak through our safe guards and onto our shelves.

To ensure you are protecting our forests for future generations and buying timber furniture from sustainable sources here are a few helpful hints to keep in mind.

Recycled Timber Repurposed Timber Plantation Timber

  • Reused, recycled or upcycled timber is your number one option. Not only does it provide fantastic character to your furniture, reusing existing timber such as railway sleepers or demolished building material ensures you are making a sustainable choice. This timber has already provided its traditional life cycle and every piece of reused timber means one less tree is cut down.

  • Timber with a previous purpose is also a great choice. Timbers such as mango wood and rubber wood have already fulfilled a life cycle as bearing trees. Traditionally these trees would be disposed of at the end of their bearing years however these timbers are becoming increasingly popular in furniture design providing a great sustainable solution.

  • Plantation timbers are also a safer choice for timber furniture. Radiata pine and Acacia wood have all been sustainably farmed for many decades with plantations maintaining strict replanting schedules to ensure sustainable growth is maintained.

With these simple tips in mind you can ensure your making the best possible choice for the environment as well as your home when selecting your timber furniture and timber products.

With the years biggest weekend of footy coming up and Queensland dominating the Rugby League what better reason to pull on your jersey and have your mates over for a Footy Finals celebration.

Here are our tips to make sure you’re supporting our Brisbane boys in style.

  1. Obviously the TV is going to be the focus of the day. Make sure its looking slick and uncluttered so that you can concentration on the game at hand.

  2. Comfortable seating with a good view of the TV is essential. Where talking at least a 2 hour telecast here, we can’t have you or your guest sitting in stuffy dining chairs, so if your lounge chair is not big enough, grab some of these Bronco’s bean bags and you’ll have room for everyone.
Note: Bean bags are not conducive to jumping to your feet therefore we do not recommend for the enthusiastic cheerers in the group.

  3. The game is important but let’s face it the snacks come a close second, be sure to stock up on your favourite treats, maybe some half time party pies are in order? We’d keep these cupcakes for full time celebrations!!

  4. Surely all loyal brisbanites will have a few of these lying around. Time to dig out your trusty Bronco’s stubby coolers to keep your drinks icy cold. Cowboy’s and Storm stubby coolers may be acceptable as an absolute last resort.

  5. That’s the viewing and the catering covered that just leaves the decorations. Some maroon and gold bunting and balloons should do the job, but if you want to go all out some Bronco’s throw cushions and coasters will really take things to the next level.

Now your set to watch the game is style, so sit back, relax and cheer on our Broncos to another wining season!
